Idalgashinna Station – More than just a Train Stop

Idalgashinna Station is more than just a Train Stop. Imagine a cliff between two mountain ranges joined by a narrow ridge. That is the exact but unholy location for a railway station. Located between Ohiya and Haputale, the area is surrounded by several tea estates but no particular road for travel other than by train.

It is such a cool and misty place, that the station is completely covered by mist for most part of the year. This railway station has a very significant place in Sri Lanka Railway as both sides of the line are steep cliffs.

From here, a magnificent mountain range on the eastern side called “the Sleeping Warrior” can be viewed. This mountain range resembles the form of a sleeping man, and so got this name.

Interesting to note is the station roofs and gutters have been built in such a manner that one side of the rain-water flows to the eastern part of the country and mixes with Kirindi Oya. Water from the other side flows into the southern part and finally mixes with the Mahaweli river.
