GREEN TEA SIDE EFFECTS

I was so obsessed with the health benefits of Green Tea, for a moment failed to see if the its side effects as an important topic for discussion.

Yes, it is important for people who are allergic to caffeine. The brew has less caffeine than standard coffee, but is not caffeine-free. Because of the high level of health benefits, it is often recommended to have between 3 to 5 cups of tea daily. However, this amount can raise caffeine levels consumed and affect those with caffeine sensitivity.

These are some of the potential problems from drinking excessive quantity of this brew:

• Keeping in mind potential adverse effects on pregnant women, it must be avoided and referred for medical advice before consuming.

• Hypertension – too much caffeine intake can increase BP levels.

• Excessive sleepiness is caused for some people particularly to those susceptible to the sedating action of Theanine.

• Interaction with medications

• May affect Children - Caffeine content can over-stimulate young kids. The Tannins content may block absorption of protein and fats in children. Therefore, it is advisable for children to limit or avoid consumption of the brew.

• Increases acid production in the digestive system and should be avoided by those with Peptic Ulcer.

• Not only it contains no calories, its Tannins content block the absorption of some of the essential nutrients to the body, especially iron. Studies show that absorption of iron is reduced by 25% by consumption of the brew.

The above are potential adverse reactions on individuals only but they are far outweighed by its overall health benefits. Keep enjoying it!
